NCC-AWIS Nomination Procedure for Awards and Scholarships

Judith Pool and Ellen Weaver Awards

Exceptional Service Award

College Scholarships

Awards are presented annually to two women who have combined scientific achievement and support of other women in science. Criteria for scientific achievement include accomplishments made in the laboratory, but not limited to academic or discovery research.  Service could have been to the scientific community through professional societies or schools, or to women directly, such as mentoring and career development.  One award is for a senior scientist and one for a woman early in her career. Nominees need not be AWIS members.

Judith Pool Award: Established science career, 10 or more years past training

Ellen Weaver Award: Young scientist, 5-10 years past training

Exceptional Service award: Working in non-traditional positions or in management, marketing and other affliated fields (i.e. "away from the bench")

These awards are established to recognize that assisting others in career development is an important aspect of our
professional life.  When evaluating nominees for the awards, it is excellence in this area that is being particularly sought.

Nomination Procedure:

Nominations are solicited primarily from corporate sponsors and chapter members, but other worthy nominations are welcomed.    Nominations should include a brief (1-2 page) resume or CV and a letter of nomination, explaining the nominee's assistance to women in science.

Early March: Selection by committee of designated chapter representatives.

College Scholarships
College Scholarships (typically $500 each) are awarded through the financial aid office of the individual community colleges.  Schools that have participated are listed below.  We do not promise to award a scholarship at every school listed below every year.  In some cases, two scholarships have been awarded at schools with two worthy candidates in one year.  Application deadlines will vary based on the school; awards are announced in mid-spring and winners are invited to attend the NCC-AWIS Annual Awards Dinner in late April.  Winners are also awarded a complementary one-year membership in the National AWIS organization.
